The Geography Department at the Humanities Department of the University of Sulaimani was established in 1997 to offer undergraduate studies in geography. In 2003, the department started offering graduate studies, enabling students to pursue advanced degrees in geography. Since its inception, the department has been committed to providing a high-quality education in geography that prepares students for successful careers in various fields. With its experienced and diverse faculty and a comprehensive curriculum, the department has earned a reputation as a leading institution in geography education and research.

 

The Geography Bachelor’s degree program offered by the College of Humanities at the University of Sulaimani provides a comprehensive education in both natural and humanitarian geographies. The program is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to become competent and successful geographers in various fields. The curriculum covers a broad range of topics, including physical geography, human geography, environmental geography, and geographic information systems (GIS). Students are also exposed to the latest theories, methods, and technologies used in the field of geography. With a focus on both natural and humanitarian geography, students gain a well-rounded understanding of the world, its people, and the environments they inhabit. Upon completion of the program, graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue advanced degrees in geography or related fields or to enter the workforce as professionals in a variety of industries, including environmental planning, urban design, international development, and more.

The primary mode of instruction, lectures, is designed to facilitate deep understanding of geography’s theoretical and practical aspects and equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make meaningful contributions to society.

The language of instruction is primarily Kurdish.

Duration:

The duration of study at the Department of Geography is 4 academic years, divided into 8 semesters. Each semester is 30 ECTS, and each ECTS is 27 hours.
